Articles
Full-length reports of original research, empirical or theoretical. Typically 7,000–9,000 words including references. Every article is double-anonymised peer reviewed by at least two reviewers.
Empirical papers must report effect sizes and confidence intervals rather than p-values alone, name the software and version used, and state where the data and analysis code can be obtained.
Review Articles
Systematic reviews, meta-analyses and structured literature reviews that establish what is known and what follows from it. Typically 8,000–12,000 words.
The search must be reproducible: databases, date range, exact search strings, inclusion and exclusion criteria, and a PRISMA flow diagram where the design calls for one. A narrative summary of convenient sources is not a review article.
Case Studies
In-depth studies of a single organisation, decision or event, where the value lies in the depth rather than the sample. Typically 6,000–9,000 words.
Case studies must say why the case was selected, how access was obtained, what consent was given, and what the case can and cannot support. Anonymisation of the organisation is acceptable and often wise; undisclosed anonymisation is not.
Commentary
Short, argued pieces responding to work published in this journal or to a development in the field. Typically 2,000–3,000 words.
Commentaries are reviewed by the editors and, where the argument warrants it, by one external reviewer. They are clearly labelled as commentary so that no reader mistakes an argument for a finding. Where a commentary concerns a specific paper, its authors are offered a right of reply in the same issue.
